How to Trade Gold (XAUUSD) as a Beginner: What Moves the Price and When to Trade It

Gold is part of Ghanaian life. Ghana is one of Africa's biggest gold producers, and many of us grew up hearing about gold as a symbol of wealth. So when traders see gold moving $20 or $30 in a single afternoon, it is easy to see why it attracts attention.
But the same moves that make gold exciting also make it dangerous for beginners. This guide explains what you are actually trading, what moves the price and how to approach it carefully.
What Is XAUUSD?
XAUUSD is the code for gold priced in US dollars. "XAU" stands for gold (from the Latin word aurum), and "USD" is the US dollar. If XAUUSD is at 2,400, one troy ounce of gold costs $2,400.
When you trade gold with a forex broker, you usually don't own physical gold. You are trading on its price. If you buy and the price rises, you profit. If you sell and the price falls, you profit.
How Gold Trading Works
Gold is traded in lots, just like currencies, but the sizes are different. With many brokers:
Trade size | Amount of gold | Value of a $1 move |
1 standard lot | 100 ounces | About $100 |
0.10 lot | 10 ounces | About $10 |
0.01 lot | 1 ounce | About $1 |
Contract sizes can vary between brokers, so always check your broker's details before you trade.
This matters because gold can easily move $20 or more in a day. On one standard lot, that is a $2,000 swing. On 0.01 lot, it is about $20. For a beginner, the second number is the one you want.
What Moves the Gold Price?
1. Interest rates.
Gold pays no interest. When interest rates rise, savings and bonds become more attractive, and gold can lose appeal. When rates are expected to fall, gold often gains.
2. US dollar strength.
Because gold is priced in dollars, it often moves in the opposite direction to the dollar. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies.
3. Inflation.
When people fear their money is losing value, many turn to gold to protect their wealth.
4. Global uncertainty.
Wars, political crises and financial scares often push investors towards gold as a "safe haven."
Quick Tip: Before trading gold, check the economic calendar for US inflation data, jobs reports and Federal Reserve decisions. These can move gold sharply within seconds.

Four of the main forces that move the gold price.
Best Time to Trade Gold
Gold trades almost 24 hours a day during the week, but it is not equally active all the time.
• London and New York overlap. From about 1pm to 5pm Ghana time in winter (12pm to 4pm in summer), gold usually has its strongest moves and tightest spreads.
• US news releases. Big moves often happen around 1:30pm Ghana time in winter when US data comes out. This is also when slippage is most likely.
• Asian session. Usually calmer, though surprise headlines can still move the price.
A Simple XAUUSD Trading Approach
There is no perfect strategy, but beginners do better with simple rules:
1. Find the trend. On a higher timeframe, such as the 4-hour chart, is gold making higher highs or lower lows?
2. Mark key levels. Note recent highs and lows where the price has turned before.
3. Wait for a pullback. In an uptrend, wait for price to dip towards support instead of chasing it at the top.
4. Set your stop loss first. Decide where you are wrong before you enter.
5. Size the trade to your risk. Risk no more than 1 to 2% of your account.
Test this on a demo account first and keep a journal of every trade.
Gold Trading Risks to Know
• Large moves. Gold's volatility can turn a small mistake into a big loss.
• Wide spreads at quiet times. Late at night or just before the weekend, spreads can widen.
• News spikes. Prices can jump past your stop loss during major releases.
• Overconfidence. A few good trades can tempt you to increase your lot size too quickly.
Watch Out: If you have a GH₵2,000 account and trade one full standard lot of gold, a $10 move against you would cost about $1,000. That is far more than the whole account is worth. Small accounts need small lot sizes.

On a standard lot of 100 ounces, every $1 move in gold changes your profit or loss by about $100.
Questions
Is gold good for beginners?
Gold can be a good market to learn on because it is popular and well covered in the news, but its big moves make risk control essential. Start on demo and use the smallest lot size.
What is the best time to trade gold in Ghana?
Usually during the London and New York overlap, about 1pm to 5pm Ghana time in winter and 12pm to 4pm in summer.
Why does gold move so much?
Gold reacts strongly to interest rate expectations, the US dollar and global news, so it often moves more than major currency pairs.
